IC 1396

IC1396, somtimes referred to as the garnet star nebula, is an emission nebula illuminated by a cluster of stars located in the constellation Cepheus. IC1396 lies at a distance of about 2,400 light-years and contains IC1396A, commonly called The Elephants Trunk nebula, (partially visible in this image at top center.) This area is thought to be a star forming region containing several very young stars whose age is estimated to be less than 100,000 years old.
